GETTING CREDIT — WITHOUT LEAVING IT TO CHANCE
One day Michelangelo happened to overhear a group of people admiring his Pieta. One man attributed the sculpture to Il Gobbo, much to the chagrin of Michelangelo, who took particular pride in the Pieta. Returning to the sculpture after dark that evening, he carved his name on it, so that no similar mistake could occur in the future. This is believed to be the only time that Michelangelo identified one of his works in this way. The Little Brown Book of Anecdotes, Clifton Fadiman, Ed., page 399.
