In the beginning of today’s Gospel account of Jesus’ passion and death, the Apostle John tells us that when “The high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching, Jesus answered,”
I have spoken openly for all the world to hear…I have said nothing in secret. But why ask Me? Ask My hearers what I taught; they know what I said (Jn. 18:19-21).
To which Jesus might have added, “It shows on their face” — meaning, of course, “It shows in the kind of persons they have become; it shows in their actions; it shows in the way they live. Or, as He says earlier in John’s Gospel,
I tell you most solemnly, whoever believes in Me will perform the same works as I do Myself (Jn. 14:12).
