PRAYING — HOW NOT TO
San Marcos is located in Hays County, which is named after Texas Ranger Captain, Jack Hays. During the Palo Alto battle in the Mexican War, Hays is reported to have offered a prayer something like this: “O Lord, we are about to join battle with vastly superior numbers of the enemy, and Heavenly Father, we would mightily like for you to be on our side and help us. But if you can’t do that, for mercy’s sake, don’t go over to the Mexicans, but just lie low and keep in the dark and you will see one of the dangdest fights you’ve ever seen. Amen.”
