WHOSE VOICE ARE WE IGNORING?
During the dinner on Thanksgiving, a large family gathering was interrupted by one of the little boys of the family. He yelled loudly, “PLEASE PASS THE BUTTER.” His mother was horrified at his obnoxious behavior and immediately sent him to his room. After dinner one of the relatives said that she had taped the conversation at dinner and that she had enjoyed herself so much that she thought she would play it over and over again to remind her of the occasion, but the entire family insisted she replay it right then. During the course of the tape they heard a quiet and polite voice say, “Please pass the butter.” There was no response to the request. Then they heard it again, “Please pass the butter.” Again, the request went unnoticed. All they could hear was their enjoyable conversation and laughter. And then they heard, “PLEASE PASS THE BUTTER!”
