Our text is taken from a lengthy passage in John’s Gospel often referred to as Jesus’ “Last Discourse.” It was the night of Jesus’ arrest and He was preparing the disciples for the momentous events of the coming week-end. “I am going where you cannot follow Me,” He told them (Jn.13:36). But “do not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith because I go to the Father” (Jn.14:1,12). He told them to keep the faith even after He was gone because He would not abandon them. He would not leave them on their own: “I will ask the Father and He will send you another Paraclete–to be with you always” (Jn.14:16). Then, as we have heard in today’s text, Jesus spoke that wonderfully reassuring line that said it all. To His disciples in every age, Jesus said: “All that the Father has belongs to Me” (Jn.16:15).
