Today’s Gospel account of the miraculous changing of water into wine comes early in Luke’s Gospel as a dramatic depiction of things to come. As the life of Christ is further revealed, we discover how He transforms sickness into health, despair into hope, and death into life. We discover how He transforms weak men and women like ourselves into powerful advocates of goodness and mercy.

The story is told of an elderly man who decided that it was up to God to transform his life of poverty and destitution into something better. Consequently, he fell to his knees and called out to God “I’m a good and pious man, so why must I be poor and destitute?” God immediately replied. He said that it indeed was a sad state of affairs, and to compensate the poor old man, He would see to it that he won the next million dollar lottery.
