Law enforcement officials in a Florida town received an informer’s tip that a large quantity of illegal drugs was going to be transported by car on the highway running through their municipality. Acting quickly, they erected a large sign on the thoroughfare which read:
SLOW DOWN. NARCOTICS INSPECTION AHEAD.
Actually, there was no narcotics inspection in place up ahead, but many drivers, seeking to avoid the inspection for whatever reason, immediately made U-turns on seeing the sign. And, surprise … surprise … those are the cars that were stopped and searched.
We’re well into the season of repentance. It’s self-inspection time. The warning sign Jesus posts in today’s Gospel Lesson is clear and unambiguous. And it’s meant for all of us. Twice in today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus reminds His listeners of recent catastrophic events in which many persons had lost their lives, saying,
UNLESS YOU REPENT YOU WILL ALL PERISH AS THEY DID.
