The self-help book authors try to give us easy answers to finding peace of mind and heart and soul. But often their easy answers are over-simplified and misleading. The New Testament authors, on the other hand, tell us that genuine peace of mind and heart and soul (call it happiness) does not come easily; that it involves trust; and risk; and making hard choices; and sacrifice, even persecution at times; and, ultimately, a dare-devil act of mind and heart and soul — a giant leap of faith.
In our ongoing quest for happiness we are positioned much like the Apostle Thomas in today’s Gospel Lesson. He’s been through it all:
Jesus had asked His disciples for trust in His promise of eternal union with the God of Love. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still, and trust in Me,” He said (Jn. 14:1).
Jesus had asked His disciples to risk their entire lives in a ministry of loving service.…
