Repentance,

A young mother was pushing a super-market grocery cart toward the check-out counter. The cart was filled to overflowing and, sitting behind the pile in the upper-basket, was her three-year-old son. He had opened a package of cream-filled, icing-covered cupcakes and was having a wonderful time. There was pink icing and chocolate cream everywhere — all over his hands and his face and in his hair. He was wearing it, even sitting in it. In short, he was a certified mess! Finally, when his hitherto distracted mother discovered the chaos, she said to her three-year-old, “When are you going to grow up?”

In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus is preaching to the people of His time about their need to repent. And, over-and-over again in the Gospels, we hear ourselves being called to repentance. We are here today being called to repentance. Each one of us here today is being challenged to ask ourselves: “When am I going to grow up? When am I going to…
