No Time To Blink

It has been scientifically established that the average person blinks some twenty-five times per minute. It also has been determined that each blink takes about one-fifth of a second. Consequently, if you should take a ten-hour automobile trip going sixty miles per hour, you will drive about fifty miles with your eyes closed. (Aren’t you glad to be here today? Where else can you get that kind of statistic?)

We read in today’s Gospel Lesson that Jesus “took with Him Peter and John and James and went up the mountain to pray” (Lk. 9:28). Apparently, the three Apostles were dog-tired. Their eyes were “heavy with sleep,” Luke tells us. Suddenly, as He prayed, Jesus’ “face was changed and His clothing became brilliant as lightening” (Lk. 9:29). And for those weary Apostles, it was no time to sleep — or even blink! “They kept awake,” Luke tells us, “and saw His glory” (Lk. 9:32).
