When the boy finished explaining why he was not where he was supposed to be, the mother replied, ìIím not accusing you son, of telling a lie. Iím just saying that I have never before heard of a school that gives time off for good behavior.

In todayís Gospel Lesson we have Lukeís account of John the Baptistís proclamation of the coming of the Lord. ìHe went through the whole Jordan District,î Luke tells us, ìproclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sinsî (Lk. 3:3).

The fruit of genuine repentance is much sweeter than getting time off for good behavior. When, in the spirit of repentance, Godís merciful forgiveness is embraced, and union with Him is restored, it is as though the old sins had never been committed. Godís forgiveness is that real.
