God designed us and created us for a purpose. Moreover, in and through Jesus Christ, He tells us in the Gospels that there is an important condition attached to achieving our full human potential. To fulfill the purpose for which God made us, we must put our priorities in proper order. That is to say, we must put Almighty God at the center of our lives. Consequently, Jesus says to us in today’s Gospel Reading,
“If any man comes to Me without hating his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, he cannot be My disciple” (Lk. 14:26).
The word hate, as it appears in this teaching of Jesus has an altogether different meaning than our current use of the word. Jesus is talking about putting our priorities in proper order. First comes God, period. At the center of our being, before father, mother, wife, brother, sister and all others, first comes God.
