A professional football quarterback once described Heaven as a place where “all your forward passes are completed.” (A hellish situation it might be added for a defensive back whose job it is to knock down the quarterback’s forward passes).

Many years ago, a tough-minded realist named Susan Ertz made an interesting observation. “Millions,” she claimed, “long for immortality who do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon.”

The statement holds some truth but she might also have noted that those millions who long for immortality are as likely to do so on a Sunday as on any other day of the week.

Mankind’s hunger for immortality has never been restricted to this or that day of the week, or this or that month, or to this or that period in human history.

Indeed immortality has always been in the forefront of human imagination. Whether out of fear or hope or longing or some other emotion, human imagination has worked overtime…
