One of the students smiled confidently. He thought it would be an easy assignment to complete. But, as he wrote, he soon discovered that his reasons for belief in God were not his reasons. My theology books give the arguments for belief he said, and studying those books has defined my faith. But it would not be honest for me to copy my reasons for belief in God from books, and present them as my own. The truth is, I believed in God before I ever studied theology. And the more I reflect on it the more I realize that I believed even before I knew the reasons why. I know now that it is necessary for me to breathe and that without air I would die. But long before I knew that I just breathed.
