During election campaigns the question always arises, “Are the candidates telling the truth as they see it, or are they merely telling the people what they want to hear?” The story is told of a politician who arrived late for a speaking engagement in unfamiliar territory. Because of his tight schedule he had been unable to learn anything about his audience ahead of time. When he arrived, he was led immediately to the platform and began his speech. He seized upon one of the main issues in the campaign and, using all the political rhetoric at his command, spoke at great length on the subject. Finally, he paused to take a drink of water. As he did, the head of the committee whispered to him that the sponsoring group was on the opposite side of the issue. Undaunted, the candidate continued… “My friends, I have spent considerable time spelling out in detail the opposition’s position on this issue. I will now tell you the truth.”…
