Thomas’ confession — “My Lord and my God” — is the most profound expression of Jesus’ Lordship and Divinity to be found in all of Scripture. It goes beyond belief in what Thomas saw before him — the Risen Jesus. It expresses the Christian belief in its fullness: My Lord is Risen; My Risen Lord is God: “My Lord and my God.”
Because of the popularization of today’s Gospel episode — the “Doubting Thomas” story — it might be supposed by some that “Doubting Thomas” was one of the more lackluster members of the original twelve. Other Gospel passages in which Thomas appears (though sparse in number) indicate otherwise. In John’s Gospel we find that as Jesus is preparing to journey to Jerusalem, Thomas urges the other Apostles to join Him saying, “Let us go too, and die with Him” (Jn. 11:16).
