I tell you, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine virtuous men who have no need of repentance

Robert Murray M’Cheyne is revered in Scotland as one of that nation’s great Christian Preachers. Although he died at an early age, his name already had become a household word. He was fond of telling the story of the night he preached on the text from John’s Gospel in which Jesus says, “I am the gate. Anyone who enters through Me will be safe” (Jn. 10:9). A man who had listened to the sermon came to him later and said:

I’ve been a Church member all my life, but I never felt close to Christ until now. When I heard you preach tonight something clicked and I felt that Jesus was very near to me.

Listening to you preach about Jesus’ words, “I am the gate. Anyone who enters through Me will be safe,” I realized what my problem had been for all those years: I had been trying to enter the wrong gate! I had been trying to go through the saints’…
