In the Apostle John’s account of the Last Supper, in an act of Loving Service, Jesus attempts to wash the Apostle Peter’s feet. But Peter stubbornly resists. Peter calls into question the Master’s departure from a tradition which held that only a slave could perform such humiliating work. “Never,” Peter says to Jesus. “You shall never wash my feet” (Jn. 13:8). Jesus then reminds Peter that salvation depends upon trust in the Lord, saying, “At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you will understand” (Jn. 13:7).
Over and over again Jesus showed the disciples what His mission was all about by His example. Jesus spelled out His ministry through His examples of loving service to others. The later Church came to call Him the “Servant Leader.” But Jesus’ immediate disciples didn’t understand this.
