A Louisiana lawyer applied for a loan from a Government Agency on behalf of a client. In the application, it was agreed that a certain tract owned by the client would be offered as collateral. The loan would be granted on the condition that the lawyer satisfactorily prove to the Agency that his client had clear title to the land. And so a title search was made that went all the way back to 1803, but the agency stubbornly asked that the title be cleared for the years prior to 1803. The lawyer, after a frustrating month trying to satisfy the request finally wrote Agency officials this letter:

I am now able to satisfy your requirement that title to this land be cleared for the years prior to 1803, as detailed below: Louisiana was purchased from France in that year. France had acquired title to the land from Spain, by right of conquest. Spain obtained the land through right of discovery as the result…
