Psychiatrist Gerald Jampolsky is known worldwide for his commitment to providing aid and comfort, on both the physical and spiritual levels, to children who are terminally ill with cancer. In a book he has written for adults entitled “Letting Go of Fear,” he reminds us that conditional love, which involves the “getting” motivation, inevitably leads to conflict and distress. And when we put all our attention into giving, the “giving” motivation inevitably leads to a sense of inner peace and joy. Then he offers us some insight into the choices involved in “re-training the mind” from a “getting” to a “giving” mode. “Ask yourself,” he says, “How do I choose?”:
Do I choose to experience peace of mind or do I choose to experience conflict?
Do I choose to experience love or do I choose to experience fear?
Do I choose to be a love-finder or do I choose to be a fault-finder?
