Sermon Week/Year
During the Vietnam War, the legendary pacifist Pastor A.J. Muste stood in front of the White House night after night with a lit candle, in persistent and peaceful protest. A reporter asked him, “Do you really think that standing here with a candle can change the world?” He answered, “I don’t stand here with my candle to change the world. I stand here to keep the world from changing me.”
It has been said that nothing in the entire Biblical Message is more thoroughly resisted and rejected by modern man than its insistence on the need for change — the need for repentance. And we know that sometimes it is our society in general that needs changing. We may dream of a day when there is no more war, no more hunger, no more hatred in the world, but the fact remains that the change necessary to achieve that goal begins with you and me. The need for change of course begins within.
