Your endurance will win you your lives

In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus’ warning of things to come may likely remind us of the evening newscasts in which death, destruction, and disasters of every sort have become standard fare for those who have the stomach to tune in. And yet, Jesus gives us His assurance: “This is something that must happen,” He says, “but do not be deceived … do not be frightened … not a hair of your head will be lost. Your endurance will win you your lives” (Lk.21:8,9,19).

Jesus is pleading with His followers to be patient with Him; to persevere in the faith, even in the midst of all the terrible calamities He tells them to expect as part of life. “When disaster strikes, don’t give up” he is saying. “Keep My Word; the Kingdom of God will come in its fullness; nothing can defeat God’s purposes; no evil force can ultimately thwart God’s plan for your fulfillment.”
