In the tragic play “Endgame” by Samuel Beckett, the characters rattle on about the miseries of life, and play cruel tricks on each other to get their minds off their agony. It’s all very depressing. Following a performance of the play, a psychiatrist told the director he had brought a sixteen-year-old patient who had attempted suicide three times. “But why this play?” the director asked. “Why such a hopeless statement for a girl already wallowing in fear and depression?” The doctor pointed out that the play opened up entirely new channels of hope for this girl. “Through it,” he said, “she began to see that her problems were truly shared by others, and as she left the theater that night she was almost dancing on air. Had I taken her to a bouncy musical she would have been completely turned off,” the psychiatrist said. “I have to work with her where she is.”
