Don’t Treat Me Like A Potato!

There are a few widely circulated daily newspapers that pride themselves on creating clever headlines. I’m sure you’ve seen them. In ironic, humorous and sometimes low-brow fashion, they attempt to convey the day’s news with just a few startling words, or a provocative turn-of-phrase. And it works. Headlines sell newspapers. Of course far greater in number are those publications of more modest circulation — your typical weekly, serving only a few thousand residents. And these papers are usually written by young, inexperienced journalists, just learning the ropes. As a result, their headlines can sometimes provide unintended entertainment for the reader. Here are a few such examples:

Something Went Wrong in Jet Crash, Experts Say
Drunks Get Nine Months in Violin Case
Two Sisters Reunited after 18 Years in Checkout Counter
War Dims Hope for Peace
If Strike Isn’t Settled Quickly, It May Last a While
