Many of the world’s finest Oriental rugs come from small villages in the Middle East. The rugs are produced by hand by a crew which is directed by a master rug weaver. Most of the work is done from the underside of the textile, and so occasionally, a weaver will make a mistake and introduce the wrong color wool into the work. When such a mistake occurs, the master weaver will find a way of working the new color into the existing pattern, in harmony with the rest of the rug rather than pulling the threads from the color sequence. Out of an unexpected difficulty, a new and sometimes more beautiful pattern will emerge.
The rug maker’s lesson is useful for everyone — for we all can take unexpected difficulties and weave them into the greater pattern of our lives. An inherent good can be found in overcoming most difficulties.
