The following is a true story. A woman reported that when she started eating breakfast regularly at an old-fashioned diner in Pittsfield, Mass, she noticed that there was a nail stuck into the wall behind the counter, and every other day there would be a doughnut hung on it. After a while, she inquired as to the meaning of this strange phenomenon. It turned out that doughnuts were two for 15 cents, and that a certain prominent businessman habitually ate only one doughnut for breakfast. So he’d buy two doughnuts every other day, and he would have one hung on the nail so that he could have it the next day.
