Before he died, at age 24, a young man named Tommy told this story of his search for self-improvement: the “good life” . . . fulfillment . . . happiness — his search for God:

I was taking a “Theology of Faith” course in college. On the last day of class, the professor asked me if I thought I would ever find God. “No!” I answered. Then the professor said, “But He will find you.”

I thought about that a lot, even though my search for God was not very intense at that time. But when the doctor removed a lump from my groin and told me it was malignant, I got serious about locating God. And when the malignancy spread to my vital organs, I really began banging bloody fists against the bronze doors of Heaven.

I decided to spend what time I had left doing something more profitable. I thought about the Theology of Faith professor. And I remembered something else he had…
