CLEANING OUT MY HEART
I was cleaning out my heart one day,
And there in the dust of my life,
I discovered in all of the corners,
Lay bitterness, fear, and strife,
Hatred I thought as forgotten,
Pettiness, anger, regret,
Selfishness and vanity were stored there,
Molded in black silhouette.
I tossed them out in my cleaning,
And burned them with fire from my shame.
I waxed, I polished and worked there,
‘Til I heard someone calling my name,
“My dear, what have you done to yourself?”
Said my neighbor across the way,
“You look so happy.” Why, of course she knew,
I had cleaned out my heart that day. Anonymous
