BJARNI SYNDROME
The Greenlander’s Saga records the adventures of the Norse explorers who sailed across the North Atlantic Ocean in search of uncharted lands. Bjarni Herjolfssen found his way into that saga by accident. He had gone to visit his father in Iceland and learned his father had left the family farm for Greenland. Bjarni set sail immediately for Greenland, though he had never been there. His ship was blown off course in a storm and when the weather broke it was nearing some islands. Bjarni refused to land because he was looking for Greenland and the islands didn’t look like Greenland to him. He kept sailing and drew near some more islands. Once again, Bjarni refused to land because he was looking for Greenland and these islands didn’t look like Greenland. When he was later called by King Earl Eirik to give an account of the trip he was rebuked for bypassing all the other islands. He should have stopped to explore these…
