Dwight Gooden was a phenomenal pitcher for the Mets some years ago. At one time he was one of the most heralded players to go into baseball. He was in the majors at eighteen. He won twenty-four games his rookie year. He threw the ball about a hundred miles an hour, and he struck out just about everybody. By twenty-two he was world famous and a multimillionaire; and then drugs destroyed him. The story goes that when Gooden was in his rookie year, someone asked Bob Feller, the most celebrated player of his generation, what he thought about Gooden.
