Does the name Thomas McKean sound familiar? Probably not. Thomas McKean was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The problem with his signing of the declaration, however, is that McKean did not sign the document until 1781 which was years after it was adopted. His name did make it onto the document, but not until he knew it succeeded. He added his support only after he knew there was no personal danger in doing so. The whole course of the United States of America would have been different if the other signers would have done the same as Thomas McKean. What a difference between Thomas McKean and John Hancock. John Hancock was one of the first men to sign the Declaration of Independence–even though he knew it could mean the loss of his life. Not only did he sign it, he signed it with such a bold flourish that his name has become a synonym for “signature”.…
