THE DONUT
Next to apple pie, few desserts are considered more American than the humble donut (or doughnut). During the two World Wars, special donut- making machines went from one battle area to another to provide soldiers with this favorite American treat. So it may come as quite a surprise to learn that the donut is not actually American. It was brought over from the Netherlands more than 300 years ago by the Dutch colonists, and then became a popular accompaniment to coffee and milk. But it took Americans to market them in little shops like Dunkin Donuts.
