TOO CLOSE TO APPRECIATE
A number of years ago, we took a family vacation to the upper peninsula of Michigan. Our oldest daughter was three years old that year, and she did not want to leave her friends, but we talked her into it. We started on our way. When we got to the Mississippi River at Muscatine, Iowa, we crossed the river on an old bridge there. Now if you have crossed that bridge, you remember it was very narrow, old, and creaky. And it had a turn in it on the Illinois side. To our amazement our daughter took a liking to that bridge. She wanted to go back over it, but we told her we were going to see the longest bridge in the world, the one crossing the Mackinac Straits. We talked about this incredible bridge all the way there. Every time we approached a bridge, she wanted to know “Is this the bridge?” Needless to say, we were weary…
