THE SILENT CHRIST
The King’s Game – the basalinda, on the floor in the courtyard of the Antonia Fortress where Jesus was tried by Pilate and mocked by the Roman soldiers. The game could last a week. The winner could choose the fate of the prisoner, life or death. It usually wound up in death. And look at Jesus! In the midst of it all, he stands there poised, confident, unafraid, saddened by all the brutal proceedings. He is facing ridicule, pain and death, but his strength never waivers. An unfair trial for an innocent man: lies, plotting, conniving, trumped-up charges, scheming, bribed witnesses, political intrigue, jealousy, hostility, hatred, a mob scene, a kangaroo court. Hollywood has never had such a plot. And in the face of it all, Jesus stands tall, his silence and demeanor, condemning in its lack of condemnation for his torturers.
