THE EYES OF CHRIST
Three young men from England were visiting the great cathedral of Notre Dame. Two of the men bet the third fellow that he would not go to the priest with an outrageous confession of horrible sins. The third man took the bet and told the priest of all the sordid details of his sinfulness. The priest assigned the deceitful young man with a simple act of penance: he was to go to the statue of Christ on the cross, look into his eyes, and say, “You suffered and died for me, and I could not care less!” He was to perform this act of penance three times. The young man returned to his friends to collect his money. His friends refused to pay until the act of penance was completed. So the man went to the statue of Christ and began his assigned task.
