DANIEL WEBSTER’S FATHER
On a bleak morning Daniel Webster was helping his father build a fence on their rocky New Hampshire farm. Daniel’s father stopped his work, turned to his son, and told him he was going to college — his ambition would be fulfilled. His father’s words were: “…we intend to wear our old clothes another year. We have put a second mortgage on our farm. I was denied an education for myself, but I am determined that one of my children, anyhow, shall have a chance to be a scholar.” That night neither Daniel nor his father could sleep.
