BIG THINGS FIRST
Management consultant Steven Covey tells of standing before a seminar with an empty canister. He filled the canister with large rocks and asked, “Is it full?” Almost everyone concluded it was. He then added small pieces of gravel that filtered down around the rocks and asked, “Is it full?” Everyone assumed it was. “No, it’s not full yet,” he said. He then poured in sand, which filled the air spaces around the gravel. He asked again, “Is it full now?” Certainly it was full now! “No, it’s still not full,” he insisted. He then poured water over the sand until it was soaked and filled to the brim. “Now, what is the moral of the story?” he asked the audience. “You can always cram more into your life,” one person answered. “No, that’s not the lesson,” Covey insisted.
