RELIGION VERSUS REALITY
Ask the average churchman what difference a belief in immortality makes in his everyday life. He doesn’t know! It never occurred to him that there was any relationship. Ask him what rearing the cross of Christ has on the way he does his business. He’ll answer, “Look, you’re talking to the wrong man. I keep my business and religion in separate categories.” Ask him why a prayer of confession appears in his church’s order of worship. He’ll shrug his shoulders and guess helplessly that it must be somebody’s idea of a good program. Personally, he thinks it is unnecessarily negative, and he could get along very well without it. Ask him for the theological reasons he registered with a particular political party. He’ll look at you as if you were insane. What possible relationship could there be between one’s religious beliefs and his political affiliations? The simple fact is that he has avoided any serious study of theology for so long…
