ANTI- DISENCOURAGEMENT
Jerry Clavelle, former coach of the NFLs Houston Oilers and the Atlanta Falcons gave a speech to a civic club recently. Jerry stated that there are at least twenty qualities of leadership desired in any organization. Two of the most important: 1) character; 2) anti- disencouragement. He explains what he means by anti- disencouragement with the following story: Once the Falcons were playing the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh. The team felt as if they had hit the wall. During the first half, Pittsburgh led three to zero. With seconds left on the clock in the first half, Atlanta had the ball on Pittsburgh’s one yard line. The conventional wisdom was to kick a field goal and go into the locker room with an even score. As the coach, Clavelle had another idea.
