THANK GOD FOR THE CROSS
I serve a little congregation called the “Church of the Cross.” In honor of our name, we erected a thirty foot high cross made out of heavy timber. It gets everyone’s attention…sometimes. Even this huge cross which took six strong men to set up is often ignored by the families who use our church’s weekday nursery school or who come here for family weddings or for the funeral of a loved one. So, someone suggested that we should illuminate our cross. Well, we tried, but it was too large to easily illuminate with spotlights, and it cost too much to install neon lights around it. So, it stands there, quite massive, and quite ignored. Perhaps we overlook the cross because of what it stands for. The cross reminds us that the only sin Jesus has is our sin. The cross reminds us that the only righteousness we have is his. And that great exchange, where he carries our sin…
