WEIGHT OF THE CROSS
Taking up our cross is a part of what it means to be identified as a follower of Christ. A tourist who was attending the passion play at Oberammergau, Germany, went backstage to see the man who played the part of Christ. The tourist noticed the cross that was carried in the play and asked his wife to take his picture while he held the cross. The man could not lift the cross; it was made of heavy iron- oak beams. Turning to the actor, he asked, “I thought this was just a prop and would be light. Why do you carry such a heavy cross?” The actor replied, “Sir, if I did not feel the weight of the cross, I could not play his part.”
