WOOD PILE GENEROSITY
John Winthrop, the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, had a vision of a covenant community that would live in harmony and obedience to God. These are his words: We must follow the counsel of Micah, to do justly, to live mercy, and to walk humbly with our God. For this end we must be knit together as one person. We must entertain each other in brotherly and sisterly affection. We must be willing to abridge ourselves of our superfluities for the supply of other’s necessities. We must delight in each other, make other’s conditions our own, mourn together, labor and suffer together…as members of the same body, so shall we keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.” The story is told that John Winthrop was approached by a friend who told him that his neighbor, Neighbor Jones, was stealing wood from Winthrop’s wood pile.
