IN DEFENSE OF TACKY THEOLOGY
Richard J. Mouw, president of Fuller Theological Seminary, argues that some “intellectual Christians” should be more understanding of the sometimes shallow and tacky theology found in some areas of the church. Plastic, glow-in-the-dark statues of Jesus, referring to Jesus as our “C.E.O.” and other such allusions and metaphors may be appropriate entry-level points for persons new to the faith. Just as sometimes superficial reasons can attract couples, but must be gotten past for a meaningful relationship to be built, so these kinds of tacky theologies may provide an initial attraction, to be gotten past for a lasting relationship, but nonetheless valuable as a starting point.
