HOLLYWOOD CONGRATULATES ITSELF
Hollywood loves to congratulate itself. The entertainment industry handed out 3,182 trophies at 332 ceremonies in 1999. The number of awards rises every year. In 1997, there were 3,138 trophies at 252 ceremonies. Daily Variety counted everything from the Academy Awards to the Movies, from the Golden Frogs to the Silver Sewers. The industry trade publication found that the show business averaged an awards event nearly every day of the year, with an average of nine prizes handed out daily. There are even awards for the best awards: In September, the Oscar, Grammy and Tony Awards television shows all won Emmys. The tally included the full range of hardware handouts: The Tiger Film Awards, the Golden Rams, the Sparrows, the Bambi, the Crystal Awards, the Crystal Heart and the Czech Crystals. There were the Razzies, the Webby Awards, the Guldbagge Awards, the Trumpet Awards and the Living the Dream Award. Adapted from The Rockford Register Star, January 7, 2000
