GIMMEE PRAYERS
When we think of prayer, we often only think of requests, like the story about the mother who came to tuck her little son into bed. “Did you say your prayers tonight?” she asked. “No,” he replied, “I couldn’t think of anything I needed.” It’s sad to say that many look at God as a celestial Santa Claus and their prayers are one long series of “Gimmee, gimmee, gimmee.” Prayer consists not only of asking God for things, but of praise and thanksgiving. The Apostle Paul tells us that thanksgiving should accompany prayer of every kind: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6-7).
