HOW TO THINK OF OURSELVES
The Apostle Paul’s words in his letter to the Roman Christians are a perfect summation of the kind of self-concept we need to develop, not only to curb and control our jerkism, but to eradicate our masochistic attitudes and practices. Paul’s advice in Romans 12:3 was not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought to think, but to think soberly, that is, with sound judgment, realizing that God has made each one of us different and has given each of us different abilities, talents, and characteristics. In Building Your Self-Image, another excellent book on developing a healthy self-concept, Josh McDowell puts it well when he says: “A healthy self-image is seeing yourself as God sees you–no more and no less.” From Don’t Let Jerks Get the Best of You, Advice for Dealing with Difficult People, by Paul Meier, M. D., published by Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, 1993, p. 205
