GRACE OR LEGALISM
The list of legalism we impose on others is long–and not always obvious. We judge people for being judgmental. For not being judgmental enough. For liking praise choruses instead of Bach chorales. For sending their children to public school. For being too liturgical or too spontaneous, too politically liberal or too conservative, or too anything that doesn’t fit within our boundaries of acceptability. Where do these attitudes come from? I’ve found that I’m most legalistic when I’m least confident of God’s love for me–when I’m afraid of Him, imagining Him poised with His divine ruler, ready to rap my knuckles should I step out of line. When I can feel His love, I want to pass on that love and grace–in fact, I can’t help passing it on. From Please Pass the Grace, by Elizabeth Cody Newenhuyse
