SORRY ENOUGH TO CARE
Once a boy was carrying eggs to market in a basket. He was supposed to sell them and bring home the money to his mother. Nonetheless, he stumbled and fell, and all the eggs were broken. People gathered around and began to express sympathy for him. One finally said, “You poor little boy. I’m sorry for you. What a shame that you broke all your eggs.” Then another man stepped up and said, “I’m sorry you broke your eggs; here’s fifty cents.” Another man was sorry and handed the boy a quarter. Another expressed his sorrow with more coins, as did others, until finally the child had enough money in hand to pay for the eggs. The first person to sympathize experienced emotion for the boy but was not much practical help to him. It’s is great to experience emotions, but the emotion is not worth much if it doesn’t result in action.
