FAR FROM THE FRONT LINE
The war was raging; a young recruit was experiencing his first battle. The frightened soldier inched his way backward, backward and finally just turned and ran. He had gone quite a ways until he was abruptly stopped by an officer. The officer was pointing a revolver at the man’s head, and threatened to repay his cowardice with a summary court martial and execute him for his retreat. The soldier pleaded with the officer, “Oh, please officer, don’t shoot me; please give me another chance to prove myself.” The officer felt compassion for the young man and agreed, “All right, private, but take a closer look; I am not a captain, but a colonel.” The young soldier looked up at the officer and sheepishly apologized, “I’m so sorry, Colonel, I guess I didn’t realize how far from the front line I had come.” Adapted from Dying for a Change, by Leith Anderson, Bethany House, 1990
