ONE NEVER KNOWS
A rabbi in a small town in Russia began to get very meditative, after many years of searching for the ultimate purpose of life. He was getting old and had been in this village for many years and had begun to consider the status quo relatively unimportant. The constable decided to harass him one morning and asked him where he was going. He said he didn’t know and thus was taken immediately to jail for not telling the truth. The constable yelled at him for insulting him, “You have gone to the synagogue at this time every day for the last twenty years, and now you mock me by saying you do not know where you are going?” As the door to the cell was being closed on the rabbi, he said, “You see, one never knows what will happen next.” By M.
